About Me

Reside in Pickering with a small flock of various fowl, including Light Nova Sussex, Buff Orpingtons, Marans, Shetland, and a pair of hybrids resembling intensive battery hens. Also have some Indian Runner ducks that lay a superb blue egg.

"Blossom" the triple yolker media star has unfortunately passed away. Bought from Keith as a pair of POL light nova Sussex, she regularly laid double yolkers, and was a huge bird. She died of peritonitis after becoming eggbound. Her egg laying prowess, was also her demise, but what a bird!

Does anyone know of a comprehensive way of getting rid of both Northern and Red Mite that doesn't take hours of work? Took my eye off the ball in the summer and received a major infestation. Only now am I virtually clear of the cursed parasites. Started by totally cleaning out and pressure washing the house and power spraying a concentrated dose of Jeyes fluid into all the cracks and crevices, leaving 30 mins and then washing out again. I removed all wooden nest boxes to replace with plastic crates and redesigned the perches to allow minimum contact with the house sides. I next used petroleum jelly to seal the ends of all perches and cracks and finally gave the house in general a thorough dusting with Bartles Louse Powder and Smite Powder worked into the chickens feathers. Still the mite came back within a couple of weeks as they could once again be clearly seen under the perches. After weeks of similar cleaning and dusting, only now do I appear to have got them under total control. Am I doing something wrong or does anyone know of a brilliant treatment to stop them? Marc. PS. I have even checked under the roofing felt which appears clear!
